ABOUT THE NEW GUARD

THE NEW GUARD is a contest-centered, independent literary review, publishing 35+ emerging writers each year from the US and abroad. We proudly publish in print, with the exception of our online feature, BANG!, a page on this site that publishes three short works by a single writer for a full month at a time.

The New Guard and High Frequency Press are here to showcase newcomers alongside established writers, and to juxtapose tradition with experiment to create a new dialogue. The Writer's Hotel makes up the editorial arm of TNG and HFP. Via The Writer's Hotel, we host writers conferences and offer private study programs (“Workroom”). Our upcoming writers conference will be in-person in Maine! The Writer’s Hotel All-Genre “Mini MFA” will be held at Spruce Point Inn on Boothbay Harbor, June 5-11. Apply today!

At TNG, HFP and The Writer's Hotel, we work diligently to support writers. Give us your ire, your lore, your guarded passage. Write better, publish smarter. Get inspired.

Our organization holds a membership with the Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP) in the Writers' Conferences and Centers (WC&C) community, and we hold a membership with the Community of Literary Magazines and Presses (CLMP).

We are writers for writers' sake.

The New Guard is a must-read for anyone seeking to hone his or her craft.
— Portland Phoenix
The New Guard presents a curious mixture of the traditional narrative with the experimental, whether it is intimate fan letters to long-deceased authors, short stories showcasing mythical transformations, or free-verse poems.

Donations are always welcome! TNG (est. 2009) is an independent literary review with no advertising. Our mission is to support writers, both established and emerging.

In 2011, we expanded to include our writers conferences via The Writer’s Hotel, and in 2020, we expanded to include The Writer’s Hotel Weekend Conferences. Our writers conference is also independent and free of advertising. We feel it is important to remain independent. Our writers’ needs are always first.

We work hard every day to serve writers, in practice and in print. If you like what we do, please consider giving a donation. Every dollar counts for writers!
